The interior design industry is about using and combining expertise in materials, colours, lighting, universal design, health/safety issues, and sustainability to improve the function and quality of interior spaces. The four–year Bachelor of Interior Design program at Algonquin College, recognized by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, is one of the few interior design degrees offered in Canada.
The program is designed to prepare you to pursue a professional career by providing an extensive and valuable learning experience which includes future–oriented courses, specialized seminars, and professional electives. The combination of theory, analysis, and practice will help you become a skillful designer able to design environments consistent with industry standards and within legal and ethical guidelines.
“I had a job one week after graduation. The faculty did an excellent job preparing us for our career. It was definitely an education of a lifetime.” -Amanda, Interior Design graduate
During your studies, you will have the chance to experience real-world challenges and opportunities in the industry, as a significant part of the program is 10 hours of volunteer public service each semester. The volunteer hours will include both opportunities within the program, Algonquin College, and the interior design industry, as well as some in a broader community, including organizations such as Habitat For Humanity, Canadian Blood Services, Doors Open Ottawa, Relay For Life, and more. In your fourth year of the program, you’ll have the opportunity to specialize in an area of interest specific to interior design.
“The knowledge gained within the halls of Algonquin has carried me from Ottawa, across the pond, to a great position in a London-based design firm. Because of the strong foundation of skills I acquired through this program I am now being sought by more than one firm.” – Matthew, Interior Design graduate
The Bachelor of Interior Design program is an enriching experience that will fully develop your creative and critical thinking skills and prepare you to pursue a professional career in interior design.
